Straight Talk on DLC, Energy Star and Lighting Facts Testing

There’s a lot of confusion out there regarding Energy Star, Lighting Facts, DLC, etc.  Hopefully this will simplify the issue and help you get your hands around it.

Energy Star is for many Residential Products.  Lighting of course being one of them.  However, Energy Star does not include Commercial Equipment.  With all kinds of pressure on the government and manufacturers, the Utility companies needed something for rebates for Commercial Equipment.

DLC was created for Commercial LEDs only.  Lighting Facts was created for the DOE to promote honest labeling – if you say 7000 lumens, your light actual produces 7000 lumens.  In order to gain DLC you need Lighting Facts, an NRTL label (i.e.; UL, ETL, etc), In situ testing (i.e.; temperature test on the driver), LM80 on the chip and LM79 on the fixture.

Energy Star requires Lighting Facts, an NRTL label (i.e.; UL, ETL, etc), In situ testing (i.e.; temperature test on the driver), LM80 on the chip, LM79 on the fixture and FCC testing by a qualified laboratory.
